People from all different experiences and professions learn together about how they can provide person- and family-centered services for children and adults with disabilities. It was created to improve the health and lives of children and adults with disabilities and their family members. Trainees complete classes\, clinical observations\, policy activities\, and a family mentorship experience. Over the course of the program\, trainees work on their leadership project which they present at the end of the program. Trainees complete 150 or 300 hours of content. We will cover common functions such as seeking attention\, escaping non-preferred activities/stimuli\, and gaining tangible items. Since all behavior serves a purpose\, this presentation will provide families with tools on how to observe and collect data to determine potential function(s) and select appropriate\, function-based interventions. The goal is to make applied behavior analysis techniques more accessible to caregivers by using real-life examples and breaking down common definitions and language. \nThursday\, March 26th 6-7pm – GRTC Travel Training Information Session presented byKelsey Calder \nPresentation Information: Kelsey Calder\, Travel Training Instructor for GRTC\, will be giving an information session on how to use the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) buses to travel independently!

DESCRIPTION:We all love our kids\, and we all need some adult time too! Enjoy some time away while VDSA keep your children ages 0 to 12 safe and occupied! This event is open to families of individuals with Down syndrome and their siblings. For our respite afternoon\, we are accepting participants ages 0 to 12. Email Cheryl to join the waitlist for this event if registration is closed: ccastle@virginiadsa.org. \n\nThe VDSA Respite Event will take place on Saturday\, March 28th from 2 pm to 5 pm at the VDSA’s office (1504 Santa Rosa Rd. Suite 124 Henrico\, VA 23294). Individuals with Down syndrome (0 -12) and their siblings (up to age 12) are welcome at this event. Games and activities will be provided for the attendees. If your child will need a snack\, please bring it labeled any other supplies as well your children may need during their time with us. \nWhen you register\, please add tickets for all of the children that will attend. You will also receive an email requesting additional information about your children that will assist us as we care for them on 3/28. We must receive all of the information back before 3/24 to ensure your family’s participation. \nVDSA staff along with volunteers (who have all passed criminal background checks) will be on sight to supervise the attendees. DESCRIPTION:Nate’s Promise Art in and With Nature\n\nNate’s Promise is hosting a 4-week art course for people with congenital conditions that affect their cognitive and motor capabilities taught by VCU Art students and Nate’s Promise members. \nDate: Sundays\, April 5 – April 26 \nTime: 4 pm-5:30 pm \nLocation: 822 W Broad St (on VCU campus). \nArt in and With Nature is an inclusive art program for people with diverse learning and sensory needs. Participants will explore nature through guided\, hands-on art activities using natural materials\, while developing creativity\, confidence\, and self-expression in a supportive\, small-group environment. \nThe objectives of the course:\n– Provide an inclusive and creative experience\n– Offer a safe space to promote self-expression through art\n– Foster a sense of accomplishment and pride through completing art projects\n– Develop foundational art skills and vocabulary \nParticipants must be between the ages of 13 and 21 years. DESCRIPTION:Self-Care Time for Caregivers! \n\nWe all love our kids\, and we all need some adult time too. Enjoy time away while VDSA staff and volunteers keep your children safe and occupied! This event is open to families of individuals with Down syndrome. \n\nThe VDSA Parents Night Respite Event will take place on Friday\, April 17th from 6 pm- 8 pm at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church (215 Richmond Rd.\, Williamsburg). PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF BEFORE 6 PM. Individuals with Down syndrome and their siblings are welcome at this event. We have revamped our Parent Respite Night to make it more fun and interactive for your child. ALL AGES WELCOME\, we have some really fun activities planned including: \nA Music/Dance Class in the Dance Room (with props!)\nPlayground (weather permitting)\nArts & Crafts in the Art Room\nGames and toys in the Play Room for those that prefer quieter activities\nA fun and healthy snack\nWe will have VDSA adult volunteers as well as teen volunteers to make it extra fun. We hope the variety in activities will engage more of our kiddos for a fun night so that parents can enjoy a evening on their own. If you have a teen with Down Syndrome\, please consider allowing them to volunteer!! It will be a really fun night for everyone.\n\nAny questions please reach out to Community Coordinator\, Stephanie at scleary@virginiadsa.org\nWhen you register\, please add tickets for all of the children that will attend AND yourself (we will need your email address!). \nVDSA staff (who have all passed criminal background checks) along with trained volunteers will be on sight to supervise the attendees. \nWilliamsburg Presbyterian is within walking distance of Merchant’s Square with many shops and restaurants and the beautiful campus of William & Mary\, so feel free to park at the church and walk to your destination!
