SUMMARY:Richmond - Respite Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:We all love our kids\, and we all need some adult time too! Enjoy some time away while VDSA keep your children ages 0 to 12 safe and occupied! This event is open to families of individuals with Down syndrome and their siblings. For our respite afternoon\, we are accepting participants ages 0 to 12. Email Cheryl to join the waitlist for this event if registration is closed: ccastle@virginiadsa.org. \n\nThe VDSA Respite Event will take place on Saturday\, March 28th from 2 pm to 5 pm at the VDSA’s office (1504 Santa Rosa Rd. Suite 124 Henrico\, VA 23294). Individuals with Down syndrome (0 -12) and their siblings (up to age 12) are welcome at this event. Games and activities will be provided for the attendees. If your child will need a snack\, please bring it labeled any other supplies as well your children may need during their time with us. \nWhen you register\, please add tickets for all of the children that will attend. You will also receive an email requesting additional information about your children that will assist us as we care for them on 3/28. We must receive all of the information back before 3/24 to ensure your family’s participation. \nVDSA staff along with volunteers (who have all passed criminal background checks) will be on sight to supervise the attendees. She works at Hope Church in childcare and is a graduate of the Longwood Life program. Emily spends her time going to her river house\, crafting and cooking. She loves to dance competitively\, hang out with her friends\, attend concerts and WWE events\, and spend time with her fiancé\, to whom she recently became engaged. She is excited to teach LEAP and talk about healthy relationships.\n\n\n\n\nMolly’s bio:\n\n\nMolly is currently retired after over 30 years with the VCU Partnership for People with Disabilities\, a university center for excellence in developmental disabilities. She earned her Master’s degree in Special Education from SUNY Buffalo and began her career as a special educator for children with significant support needs and autism. Later\, as a parent of a child who received special education services\, she has lived experiences on both sides of the IEP table. \nMolly coordinated Virginia’s Positive Behavior Support Project (PBS) was endorsed as a facilitator of Positive Behavior Support in 2007. She co-leads Home and Community PBS\, a network of the International Association of PBS. For more than 20 years\, she directed three projects that assist children and adults with disabilities with issues surrounding violence\, abuse\, sexual assault\, and neglect. Together with a team of families and professionals\, she helped to develop and research LEAP: Leadership for Empowerment and Abuse Prevention\, an evidence-based intervention for adults with IDD. In addition to published academic journals. Molly is a regular contributor to Parenting Special Needs Magazine. Molly is certified trainer for Person-Centered Thinking and Stewards of Children. Her goal is to help everyone enjoy healthy relationships.

She is excited to teach LEAP and talk about healthy relationships.\n\n\n\n\nMolly’s bio:\n\n\nMolly is currently retired after over 30 years with the VCU Partnership for People with Disabilities\, a university center for excellence in developmental disabilities. She earned her Master’s degree in Special Education from SUNY Buffalo and began her career as a special educator for children with significant support needs and autism. Later\, as a parent of a child who received special education services\, she has lived experiences on both sides of the IEP table. \nMolly coordinated Virginia’s Positive Behavior Support Project (PBS) was endorsed as a facilitator of Positive Behavior Support in 2007. She co-leads Home and Community PBS\, a network of the International Association of PBS. For more than 20 years\, she directed three projects that assist children and adults with disabilities with issues surrounding violence\, abuse\, sexual assault\, and neglect. Together with a team of families and professionals\, she helped to develop and research LEAP: Leadership for Empowerment and Abuse Prevention\, an evidence-based intervention for adults with IDD. In addition to published academic journals. Molly is a regular contributor to Parenting Special Needs Magazine. Molly is certified trainer for Person-Centered Thinking and Stewards of Children. Her goal is to help everyone enjoy healthy relationships.

Each meeting is packed with engaging social skills activities that help participants make a positive first impression\, greet others confidently\, and practice active listening to build stronger friendships. Participants will explore teamwork through games\, projects\, and group challenges\, learning how to work effectively together and celebrating each other’s strengths. Our group is dedicated to boosting confidence\, enhancing personal and social skills\, and fostering meaningful relationships in a friendly and supportive environment. \nWhy join: \n– Builds Real-Life Social Skills – Members practice greeting\, listening\, and teamwork in a safe\, supportive space\, helping them feel more confident in everyday situations.\n\n– Encourages Independence – Participants learn how to start conversations\, join group activities\, and make new friends.\n\n– Provides a Safe\, Supportive Environment – The group is designed with understanding and patience\, ensuring everyone feels valued\, included\, and respected.\n\n– Promotes Emotional Growth – Activities help members recognize feelings\, handle challenges\, and resolve disagreements positively.\n– Expands Social Circles – Your adult child can meet new people\, form meaningful friendships\, and enjoy regular opportunities to connect beyond home and family. \nClub meeting dates are all Sundays: \nSeptember 14\, 21\, 28 / October 5\, 12\, 19\, 26 / November 2\, 9\, 16 (Club party) \nCost: The cost of the program is $100 (Scholarships Available) \nThis program is sponsored by the Community Care Corps/Oasis Institute.
